ALL ABOUT FILM
Zombieland (2009)
The world is overrun by the walking dead and we join a small group of survivors whose mission is to find peace and indulge in fun at a amusement park, obviously.
With blood, cursing and zombies galore you’d think Zombieland would be your run of the mill zom-com. But something else is thrown in to the usual mixed, character. This film has plenty of it, the survivors bring their own personalities to the screen and each is different from the next except one thing, the pursuit of a dream to find a little piece of home, and find the little thing that makes life worth fighting for. One of the best examples of this in the movie is a scene where the characters smash a novelty Indian store to pieces, they go wild, letting their guard down just to let of some steam. Which is important to the films message about enjoying life even in the most harrowing of situations.
Woody Harrleson’s character, Tallahassee, is by far the favourite, and his unshameful violence to the zombies is hilarious but justified. And the protagonist Columbus played by Jesse Eisenberg is brilliantly witty and not the kind of person you’d expect to see surviving a zombie apocalypse. The characters within Zombieland are three dimensional opposed to the “Human-happy-meal” characters seen in many zombie flicks, that was refreshing and great to watch, like the banter over such things as how to say goodbye correctly.
It could have done with an extra 30 minutes, detailing more about the history of the characters or the outbreak of the virus, but it can get away with it. It’s a movie more about living life other than fighting to survive, it worked really well creating a very enjoyable experience.
Oh and the surprise cameo in the film was hilarious to say the least.
